🇳🇱 Utrecht, Dallas, Indonesië. Drie plekken die een grote rol spelen of speelden in de carrière van Maarten Paes. De 26-jarige doelman werd groot bij FC Utrecht, groeide bij FC Dallas uit tot een van de beste keepers van de MLS en maakte vorig jaar zijn debuut in het nationaal elftal van Indonesië. Reden genoeg om de Nijmegenaar uit te nodigen voor een prettig gesprek in de SEG Stories podcast. Deze week deel 1 van het gesprek.
2024 was een rollercoasterjaar voor Maarten: “Er is zoveel gebeurd. Het voelde af en toe alsof ik met een Ferrari 180 kilometer per uur ging zonder remmen.” Om rust te vinden heeft hij veel baat bij de adviezen van zijn mental coach. “Keepers hebben dat nodig, wij moeten mentaal sterk zijn en 90 minuten focussen.”
De overstap naar FC Dallas en de MLS was een sprong in het diepe die fantastisch uitpakte. “Ik kreeg al snel het vertrouwen. Ik speelde alles en stond steevast bij de beste keepers van de MLS.” Die prestatie leverde hem vorig jaar een plek op in de All-Star Game, waar alleen de beste spelers van de MLS voor uitgenodigd worden.
De kwaliteit van het voetbal in de VS is er de afgelopen jaren flink op vooruit gegaan, zegt Maarten. Dat betekent dat hij vaak sterspelers tegenover zich krijgt. Messi bijvoorbeeld. “De vrije trap schoot hij perfect in de kruising maar ik had er wel mijn vingertoppen tegen. De wedstrijd daarop pak ik twee keer een één-op-één met Messi.”

At times, it felt like I was flying down the road at 180 km/h in a Ferrari with no brakes.” To keep his head cool, he relies on advice from his mental coach. “Goalkeepers need that—we have to stay sharp and focused for 90 minutes straight.”
His move to FC Dallas and MLS was a step into the unknown, but it turned out to be the best decision ever. “They trusted me from the start. I played every match and was consistently rated as one of the league’s best goalkeepers.” That performance earned him a spot in last year’s MLS All-Star Game, where only the top players get invited.
Football in the U.S. has improved massively over the past few years, according to Maarten, meaning he regularly faces some of the biggest names in the game. Like Messi, for example. “He placed that free kick perfectly in the top corner—I just managed to get my fingertips to it. In the following match, I stopped him one-on-one twice.”
